Palomar Mountain State Park is on Route S7 near Palomar Mountain and is surrounded by the Cleveland National Forest. The 2000-acre park features thick forests, picnic and camping areas, fishing, hiking, restrooms and showers. Elevations top out at 5500 feet and evenings can be chilly, even in the summer. The park is open year-round and day-use entrance is $2. Dogs are permitted but must be leashed and are not allowed on trails.
The nearby Palomar store has groceries and a restaurant, and eight miles east of the park is Palomar Observatory. The observatory is certainly worth a look, but public viewing is limited to a behind-the-glass view of the inner workings of the telescope setup, somewhat akin to the inside of a loading dock, and photographs and explanations of how the scientific marvel works and who gets to use it.
